Q&A With Brendon Nash

By: San Antonio Rampage Media Relations
01/09/2013 6:19 PM -

Defenseman Brendon Nash got off to a strong start this season for the Hamilton. On Jan. 3, the Rampage received Nash on loan from the Bulldogs, and the 6-foot-3, 206-pound defenseman is hoping to keep things rolling in the Alamo City.

The blueliner played in 26 games for the Bulldogs this season, recording one goal and seven assists. Nash also owned a plus-5 rating for Hamilton, which was good for second best on the team. He has played in two games for the Silver and Black since his move.

Rampage head coach Chuck Weber likes Nash’s puck moving skills and his ability to start a breakout or rush at the opposition.

“Brendon makes a really good first pass and he moves the puck very well,” Weber said. “He’s a very smart defensive player and he does a nice job finding himself in the right position to make plays.”

Nash missed the entire 2011-12 campaign with a shoulder injury, but has picked up where he left off in the 2010-11 season. That year, Nash eclipsed the 30-point plateau in Hamilton, tallying five goals and 25 assists in 75 games.

Nash played four seasons at Cornell University (2006-10) and tallied 67 points (eight goals, 59 assists) in 120 games. Prior to Cornell, Nash manned the blueline for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the British Columbia Hockey League, recording 60 points (nine goals, 51 assists) in 112 games.
Nash took some time to answer questions following a Rampage practice.

On his experience with the Rampage thus far:
“It’s been great so far. The guys have been really good with helping me out and trying to get me adjusted to the new systems, living arrangements and everything else that comes with being on a new team.”

On adjusting to the new defensive system:
“It is fairly different than the one I came from in Hamilton. But it has been good. They have been strong help, and it’s a little bit easier to play than the one I came from. It’s nice to adjust to it. I have played it before, so I am getting used to it again and bringing back old habits.”

On the warm weather in Texas versus Hamilton, Ontario:
“It’s a nice change. I came from about a two feet of snow leaving Hamilton. It’s a nice change right now. I can’t wait for a hot winter.”

On his feelings he has towards playing against his brother, Riley, who plays for Charlotte:
“As a pro, I haven’t played him yet. Hamilton didn’t play Charlotte at all in the three years I had been there and he had been in Charlotte. So, it’s going to be a great first time next month.” (Note: The Rampage and Checkers next play on Feb. 9 in Charlotte).
