SUNRISE, Fla. – The following players were selected by the Florida Panthers in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft: No. 2 – F Aleksander Barkov, No. 31 – D Ian McCoshen, No. 92- G Evan Cowley, No. 97- D Michael Downing, No. 98 – F Matt Buckles, No. 122 – F Christopher Clapperton, No. 152 – D Joshua Brown and No. 206 (acquired from Montreal for Florida’s 2014 seventh round choice) – D Mackenzie Weegar. Florida selected three forwards, four defensemen and a goaltender in Sunday’s Draft held at the Prudential Center in New Jersey.
Barkov, 17, totaled 48 points (21-27-48) in 53 games with Tappara (Finnish Elite League) in the 2012-13 season, finishing second on his team in scoring, helping earn the No.1 ranking among European Skaters according to Central Scouting Services. The 6-2, 205-pounder Tampere native also recorded 16 points (7-9-16) in 32 games for Tappara in the 2011-12 season.
McCoshen, 17, played in 53 games for the Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL) last season, scoring 11 goals with 33 assists and a plus-35 rating. He ranked first among all defensemen on Waterloo with 44 points. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound defenseman is expected to attend Boston College in the fall.
Cowley, 17, played in 50 games with the Wichita Falls Wildcats (NAHL) last year, going 22-24-4 with a 2.90 GAA. The 6-foot-4, 185-pound netminder is expected to attend Denver University in the fall.
Downing, 18, played in 52 games with Dubuque (USHL) last season, scoring three goals with 20 assists and 107 PIM. The 6-foot-3, 192-pound defenseman is expected to attend the University of Michigan in the fall.
Buckles, 18, played in 50 games with St. Michael’s Buzzers (OJHL) last year, and led his team registering 71 points (40-31-71) and 107 PIM. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound forward is expected to attend Cornell University in the fall.
Clapperton, 19, played in 67 games for Blainville Boisbriand Armada (QMJHL) last season, leading his club with 34 goals, while placing second on the team with 77 points (34-43-77).
Brown, 19, played in 68 games with the Oshawa Generals (OHL) last year, registering 16 points and 79 PIM.
Weegar, 19, played in 62 games with the Halifax Mooseheads last season (QMJHL), scoring eight goals with 36 assists, while winning a Memorial Cup Championship.
