SAN ANTONIO (Feb. 12, 2014) – The San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team finished out their fifth annual tournament this weekend at the Ice & Golf Center at Northwoods with an even 2-2 record. Taking their first two games with ease and outscoring their opponents a combined 7-1, the Rampage fell in back-to-back shootouts to end the weekend.
Luke McDermott led the attack for the Rampage, ending the tournament with seven goals and one assist for eight points through four games. Michael Horning added to the offense with a goal and two assists, while netminder Brock Contreras allowed just three goals on 40 shots, and recorded one shutout.
The Rampage started out strong, downing the DASA St. Louis Blues 4-1 on Friday afternoon. McDermott recorded a hat trick in the win, adding an assist for four points on the night. Lonnie Hannah registered two helpers, and Derrick Ross effectively iced the game in the Rampage’s favor with a goal in the third period.
They continued their dominance on Saturday morning, shutting out the RIC Chicago Blackhawks to the tune of 3-0. Horning had a two-point game with a goal and an assist, while McDermott and Chris Leverkuhn added additional goals.
Despite two regulation goals and a shootout tally from McDermott, the Rampage were bested by the Colorado Avalanche Saturday night, falling 3-2 in a shootout. The skills competition foiled them again Sunday morning, as they fell 2-1 to the Blues.
The Rampage hit the ice again March 7-9, as they travel to Chicago for the Midwest Sled Hockey League (MSWHL) Championship weekend. The tournament crowns a MWSHL champion as well as decides who will be guaranteed a spot in the National Championship at the Disabled Festival, which will be held in Marlborough, Mass., from April 11-13.
The San Antonio Rampage Sled Hockey Team was the first team to form that consists of all wounded military service members. The team is run by Operation Comfort, a nonprofit organization that works with wounded Service Members coming from Iraq and Afghanistan who are recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in San Antonio, Texas.
The Rampage Sled Hockey Team was formed in January 2007 and was adopted by the San Antonio Rampage of the American Hockey League shortly thereafter. The Rampage (AHL) continues to host various fundraising events – including their annual Military Appreciation Night on March 1 – to raise money to support the Rampage Sled Hockey Team. The sled hockey team started with seven players and has quickly gained popularity, as the team now consists of more than 20 players. The team began playing in tournaments in 2008 and has since traveled throughout the United States.
They are two-time champions of the MWSHL, and boast three members of the U.S. National Sled Hockey Team in Rico Roman, Josh Sweeney, and Jen Yung Lee. The trio will be representing the United States at this year’s Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia from March 7-11.
