Charlotte Checkers (4) at San Antonio Rampage (3)
Nov 18, 2012 - 4:30 PM

Game Notes »

SAN ANTONIO (November 18, 2012) – The San Antonio Rampage (4-8-0-2)  recorded a season-high 36 shots on goal, but ultimately fell to the division-leading Charlotte Checkers (11-3-0-2)  in a shootout, 4-3, on Sunday night at AT&T Center in front of 3,890 fans.

Rampage forward Scott Timmins fired three shots on net and scored his first goal of the season on the way to Third Star of the Game honors, but Chris Terry’s goal in the fifth round of the shootout secured the win for Charlotte. Rampage goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris made 32 saves off of 35 shots in the loss and stopped all but one of the Checkers shooters in the five-round shootout.

Greg Rallo found the back of the net first on Sunday at 8:16 of the opening frame when a timely screen in front of Checkers goaltender Justin Peters blocked his view of Rallo’s shortside shot. The goal was his third of the season.

Charlotte answered back with a goal from Brett Sutter at 15:04 of the first period. Sutter capitalized on a Rampage turnover and fired a shot over Grumet-Morris from the right circle.

The Rampage reclaimed the lead at 17:53 of the opening frame on the power play. San Antonio forward Jon Rheault tried to throw the puck at the net and it deflected right to James Wright in the high slot, who fired the puck past Peters to give the Silver and Black a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The goal marked the second game in a row where the Rampage connected at least once with the man advantage.

Charlotte once again tied the game just 21 seconds into the middle frame. Checkers forward Zac Dalpe found a waiting Bobby Sanguinetti who fired a hard shot that beat Grumet-Morris low.

Timmins gave the Rampage the 3-2 lead at 12:05 of the third period when he found a rebound off an Eric Selleck shot and banged it home at the top of the crease.

Zac Boychuk answered for the Checkers at 2:51 of the third when he roofed a backhand shot over Grumet-Morris to round out the scoring in regulation.

After a scoreless overtime period that featured several good chances during a Rampage power play, San Antonio found themselves in their second shootout of the season.

Peters made five straight saves in the shootout for the Checkers, while Grumet-Morris stopped all four Charlotte shooters before Terry found the back of the net in the fifth round for the game winner.

San Antonio ended the night 1-for-4 on the power play, while Charlotte went 0-for-2. Both teams recorded 36 shots on goal.

The Rampage will continue the homestand on Black Friday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. against the Houston Aeros at AT&T Center. The game will be the first of a home three-in-three over the holiday weekend. Friday’s tilt will also be a KZEP Dollar Drink Night.

Individual, and season, tickets start at $10 and can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
