Home Winning Streak Halted

The San Antonio Rampage (4-5-0-1) jumped out to an early lead in the first period, but a late surge by the Toronto Marlies (6-4-0-1) ended the Rampage’s home-winning streak at four games, as San Antonio fell to Toronto, 5-3, Saturday night at AT&T Center in front of 6,485 fans on Face-Off Against Kids Cancer Night, presented by the Little Fighter Foundation.

Andre Deveaux had a goal and an assist against his former team, earning him Second Star of the Game honors. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves off 34 shots in the loss.

The Rampage opened the scoring at 3:30 into the first period when Jon Rheault caught a pass in the slot and beat Marlies goaltender Mark Owuya. The pass was off line but Rheault caught it in his skates and settled it down before shooting high on Owuya.

The goal was Rheault’s third in three games and also marked his fourth point during his current three-game point streak.

San Antonio took a 2-0 lead at 10:24 of the first period when a turnover in the Toronto zone gave Deveaux a clear shot. Owuya made the save on the initial shot, but the rebound trickled left to an open Jean-Francois Jacques who stuffed it by the Marlies goaltender.

The Rampage led after the first period for only the second time this season, but the Marlies found a way back.

Leo Komarov put the Marlies on the board on a deflection of a Keith Aucoin shot that beat Markstrom at 9:57 of the second period.

The Rampage were quick to answer on the power play, though, when Deveaux tipped a Greg Rallo shot from the half wall to put San Antonio back up by two at 13:43.

The game continued to go back and forth until the Marlies answered with a power-play goal of their own. Nazem Kadri got the puck to Jake Gardiner on the half wall where he moved up and fed a cross-crease pass to a waiting Joe Colborne, who shot it high past Markstrom.

Greg Scott tied it for Toronto 41 seconds into the third period, but Markstrom held off the attacking Marlies for a good portion of the frame, making several impressive saves.

It was Kadri who gave the Marlies their first lead of the night when he walked in down the right wing and beat Markstrom blocker side at 13:49 of the final frame.

Jerry D’Amigo added an empty-net goal to seal the win for Toronto, which was their first win at the AT&T Center since November 2010.

Prior to Saturday’s three-goal outburst in the third period by Toronto, the Rampage had only allowed a combined three goals in the third period in the first nine games of the season.

Following the game, the Rampage auctioned off the custom jerseys they made for the game, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Face-Off Against Kids Cancer, the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, and the Little Fighter Foundation.

The Rampage conclude their four game homestand with a Tuesday morning tilt with the Houston Aeros for their Cool School Education Day.  Puck drop will be at 10:30 a.m. at AT&T Center. Individual, and season, tickets start at $10 and can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com
