Cincinnati on a Mission to Take Back the Cup

While the American Hockey League is the top developmental league for the National Hockey League, many of its players can claim allegiance to one of the 21 teams in the ECHL. For the San Antonio Rampage, that team is the Cincinnati Cyclones. After spending time between the now-defunct International Hockey League and the ECHL, the Cyclones have been a permanent staple in the ECHL since the 2006-07 season. They’ve won four divisional championships and two Eastern Conference championships, going on to win the Kelly Cup both times (2008 and 2010). Both of those championship teams were coached to success by Chuck Weber, who now serves as associate coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Rampage.

On the current Rampage roster, six players have donned a Cyclones sweater at one point in their professional careers. For five of that six, parts of the 2013-14 season have been spent in Cincinnati. The list includes G Michael Houser, RW Anthony Luciani, D Josh McFadden, RW John McFarland, LW Tony Turgeon, and LW Garrett Wilson. Wilson has spent the entirety of this season with the Rampage, beginning the season on their Opening Night roster.

Additionally, Rampage captain Greg Rallo (Idaho Steelheads), and C Ryan Martindale (Stockton Thunder) each have spent time in the ECHL in their careers.

The Cyclones clinched a playoff spot on April 5, and as the number 5 seed, will face off against the Orlando Solar Bears in the conference quarterfinals. Joining them for their playoff run are RW Jonathan Hazen, LW Trevor Lewis, G Rob Madore, C Wade Megan, and RW Logan Shaw, all faces that have become very familiar in San Antonio this season.

Megan in particular flourished with the Rampage this year, breaking out as a solid and dependable option at center, and heated up especially at the tail end of March. The Canton, N.Y. native tallied four goals and two assists in a five-game span, and followed that up with a three-game point streak (3g-1a) to close out the month. After his second (and final) recall from Cincinnati on Dec. 19, he led all Cyclones skaters in goals (13) and points (20) before heading to the Alamo City. His 20 points also placed him fourth overall in the ECHL for scoring at that point in time.

Shaw, a winger whose physicality on the ice has been consistently praised by Rampage head coach Tom Rowe, began the season with San Antonio but spent some time in Cincinnati before earning the recall back up on Dec. 30. In his 46 games with the Rampage this season, he earned both his first AHL point (an assist) on Jan. 18 and scored his first AHL goal in a 3-1 win at Lake Erie on Feb. 8.
