Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have recalled defenseman Garrett Stafford from the San Antonio Rampage, the Coyotes American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. In addition, the Rampage have recalled defenseman Nick Ross from their ECHL affiliate, the Las Vegas Wranglers, and have signed defenseman Craig Switzer to a professional try-out (PTO).
The 6-foot-0, 195-pound Stafford currently leads all San Antonio defensemen in scoring with 12 points (3-9-12) and is second overall in scoring among defensemen in the AHL. The 29-year-old native of Los Angeles, CA. has recorded three multi-point games this season, including a three-point night (1-2-3) vs. CHI on October 8.
Last season, Stafford collected 32 points (7-25-32) in 60 games with the Texas Stars (AHL). He ranked ninth overall in scoring on Texas, while finishing the regular season 33rd overall among defensemen in the league. Stafford signed with the Coyotes as an unrestricted free-agent on July 3, 2010.
Ross, 21, has skated in six games with the Wranglers this season collecting two assists. He appeared in 47 games with the Rampage last season posting two assists and 19 penalty minutes. The Edmonton, Alberta native recorded an assist and two penalty minutes in seven games with the Wranglers last season. He was selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round (30th overall) in the 2007 NHL Draft.
Switzer, 26, has appeared in seven games this season with the Wranglers recording one goal and two assists. He has skated in 143 career ECHL games posting 10 goals and 42 assists between Las Vegas, Elmira and Florida. During the 2008-09 season he skated in two games with the Quad City Flames (AHL). The Peachland, British Columbia native attended the University of New Hampshire (NCAA) for four years (2004-08) skating in 158 career collegiate games totaling 12 goals and 55 assists.
