Rampage Defeat Texas, 5-4

Game Notes | Box Score

CEDAR PARK, Texas. (March 8, 2013) – It took the longest shootout in franchise history, but the San Antonio Rampage (26-25-1-4)  earned a 5-4 victory against the Texas Stars (33-16-4-6) to give the Rampage a winning record for the first time of the season, as San Antonio defeated Texas, 5-4, on Friday night at Cedar Park Center.

Jed Ortmeyer scored the game-winning goal in the franchise-record 12th round of the shootout and netminder Dov Grumet-Morris made 10 of 12 saves in the record-setting shootout to help the Rampage to their first win at Cedar Park Center since March 10th, 2012.

The Rampage are now 8-2-1-0 in their last 11 games and own a 6-3-1-0 record in their last 10 games away from the AT&T Center.

Grumet-Morris stopped 36-of-40 shots and Greg Rallo tallied two goals, including the game-tying goal while shorthanded at 16:19 of the third period. Ortmeyer and Zach Miskovic also chipped in a goal and an assist in the victory.

The Rampage and Stars exchanged power-play goals in the opening frame. Stars winger Tomas Vincour opened the scoring on the night at 16:44 with a one-timer from the top of the left circle.

Rampage forward Greg Rallo responded less than two minutes later when he blasted a snap shot through traffic and past Stars netminder Cristopher Nilstorp. Quinton Howden and Zach Hamill collected assists on Rallo’s 18th goal of the year, which leads the team.

The Rampage outshot the Stars, 10-5, in the opening frame, marking the first time San Antonio has outshot Texas in a period in the last five meetings between the two clubs dating back to Dec. 19th at Cedar Park Center.

Zach Miskovic gave the Rampage a 2-1 lead at 2:13 of the second period. Miskovic rang a shot off the pipe from the top of the slot and eventually found the puck again at nearly the same spot and made no mistake the second time around, burying the shot over the glove of Nilstorp.

Howden looked to extend the Rampage lead seven minutes into the second period when he created a turnover and walked in cleanly on a breakaway. Howden deked and eventually brought the puck to his backhand, but Nilstrop was able to extend his right pad to make the save.

Grumet-Morris made a fantastic glove save on Stars captain Maxime Fortunus nine minutes into the second period, but Colton Sceviour tied the game shortly thereafter when he banged home a rebound by Grumet-Morris at 9:26 of the second period.

The Rampage were outshot, 19-5, in the middle frame, but the two teams remained tied at 2-2 heading into the second intermission.

Vincour tallied his second goal of the game 19 seconds into the third period while the Stars were on a 5-on-3 power play to give Texas the 3-2 lead.

Ortmeyer tied the game once again at 3-3 with a great shot from his knees at 4:25 of the third period. Rookie defenseman John Lee fed him a perfect pass in the slot and Ortmeyer was able to find the back of the net, despite being tripped up.

Texas cashed in for the third time of the night with the man advantage at 15:06 of the third period when Fortunus blasted a shot from the point that found its way through traffic and past Grumet-Morris.

But the Rampage weren’t done just yet. Rallo netted his second goal of the game at 16:19 while shorthanded to once again tie the game. Miskovic collected an assist on the goal, marking his first multi-point game of the season for the Rampage in his eighth game in the Silver and Black.

Neither team was able to break the tie in regulation or in overtime, so the game went to a shootout. The two teams were tied, 1-1, through the first five rounds of the shootout and neither side was able to light the lamp for the next five shooters. Eric Selleck scored in the 11th round, but Stars Brett Cameron followed suit with the Stars corresponding shot.

Ortmeyer scored on his first shootout attempt of the season in the 12th round and Grumet-Morris stopped former Rampage forward Doug Jones to secure the victory at Cedar Park Center.

The Rampage were outshot, 40-25, in the game and Texas went 3-for-7 on the power play, while San Antonio was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

The Rampage will return home to kick off a four-game homestand on Sunday for their sixth annual Pucks & Paws game at 4:30 p.m. against the Oklahoma City Barons. Tickets are only $20 for you and your dog and $5 of every dog ticket sold will be donated to the Alamo Area Partners for Animal Welfare (AAPAW).

Tickets for Pucks & Paws, and all remaining Rampage home games, can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com
