Rampage Fall in Shootout to Heat, 5-4

Box Score | Game Notes

SAN ANTONIO (March 17, 2013) – Rampage forward Jack Combs tallied two goals in only his second game with the team, but the San Antonio Rampage (27-26-1-6) fell to the Abbotsford Heat (29-27-3-6), 5-4, in a shootout on Sunday afternoon in front of 6,858 fans at the AT&T Center.

Combs recorded his first goals as a member of the Silver & Black on his way to Third Star of the Game Honors, while Zach Hamill tallied his 16th point in 16 games since joining the Rampage. Rookie Jared Gomes also had two assists in the game.

The shootout loss brought San Antonio to within six points of the eighth, and final, playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris made 37 saves off 41 shots but allowed two goals in three attempts during the shootout. The Rampage were shutout by Barry Brust in their four shootout attempts.

Abbotsford rookie Sven Baertschi opened the scoring for the Heat at 8:20 of the first period when he batted a puck out of midair past Grumet-Morris for the 1-0 lead.

Brett Carson gave Abbotsford a 2-0 lead at 16:53 of the first period when he fired a shot from the blueline while on the power play.

The Rampage were outshot, 15-8, in the first period but came out firing in the second. Combs cut the lead in half when he fired a rebound into the net just 40 seconds into the frame, marking his first goal as a member of the Rampage. San Antonio would go on to outshoot the Heat, 17-8, but trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes.

The two teams combined for five goals in the third period. Brendon Nash got things started for the Rampage at 11:48 of the third period. Nash gathered the puck at the bottom of the left circle after turning it over and fired it over the glove of Brust.

Max Reinhart would retake the lead for Abbotsford at 13:49 of the third period.

With a little less than five minutes remaining in regulation, the Rampage rattled off two-straight goals within 14 seconds to reclaim the lead. The goals scored by Combs and John McFarland marked the fastest pair of goals scored this season since James Wright and Jon Rheault combined for two goals in 12 seconds against the Lake Erie Monsters on Jan. 11.

Blair Jones tied the game for Abbotsford with Brust pulled and just nine seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime tied at 4-4.

After a scoreless extra frame the game went to a shootout. Jones and Ben Walter scored for the Heat in the shootout while Hamill, Evan Barlow, Greg Rallo, and Combs were all stopped by Brust.

The Heat won the shot battle, 42-40, and finished the night 2-for-5 on the power play. San Antonio ended the night 0-for-3 on the man advantage. The game marked the first time in five contests that the Rampage didn’t cash-in on the power play.

The Rampage head up I-35 for a Tuesday night matchup against the Texas Stars at the Cedar Park Center. The game will be broadcasted live on Fox Sports Southwest at 7:30 p.m. The Herd will then return to the AT&T Center to face the Oklahoma City Barons on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets for all remaining Rampage home games can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
