Rampage Blanked by Rochester, 3-0

Box Score | Game Notes

SAN ANTONIO  (March 24, 2013) – Despite outshooting Rochester, 39-25, the San Antonio Rampage (27-29-1-6) were blanked by the Rochester Americans (35-25-3-1) on Sunday afternoon in front of 5,907 fans at the AT&T Center.

The loss snaps a six game winning streak against the Amerks and is the first win for Rochester at AT&T Center since March 24, 2007. Forward Jed Ortmeyer fired a team-high 10 shots, but the Rampage could not solve rookie goaltender Nathan Lieuwin, who earned his first American Hockey League win.

Rochester struck first at 15:58 of the first period when Maxime Legault wristed a shot past goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris after the puck deflected off a stick and changed angles on the Rampage netminder.

The Amerks added another goal at 19:13 of the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Rochester captain Matt Ellis streaked up the right wing on a 2-on-1 rush and walked in on Grumet-Morris before depositing the puck low into the back of the net.

Nick Tarnasky tallied his second point of the game at 11:16 of the second period while on the power play. The Amerk assistant captain collected the puck at the bottom of the slot and spun around before wristing a shot past Grumet-Morris. With the goal, the Rampage have surrendered a power-play goal in three straight games.

The Rampage had back-to-back power plays to wrap up the second period but were unable to solve Lieuwen, despite outshoot Rochester, 11-6, in the middle frame. When leading after two periods, Rochester owned a 27-1-1-0 record entering the game.

Rampage forward Zach Hamill had a golden opportunity to put San Antonio on the board five minutes into the third period when he fired a shot from the bottom of the left circle on goal. But Lieuwen flashed his glove and was able to get just enough of the puck to send it wide of the net.

Rookie Jared Gomes also had a quality chance only two minutes later, but was unable to capitalize on a rebound on the doorstep from Jack Combs.

Despite mustering 18 shots on goal in the third period, the Rampage were unable to cash in and were blanked for only the fourth time this season.

The Rampage finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play, while Rochester 1-for-3 was with the man advantage on the afternoon.

The Rampage wrap up their three-game homestand  against the Grand Rapids Griffins on Thursday at 7 p.m. on an All-You-Can Eat Game at the AT&T Center. Tickets for all remaining Rampage home games start at $10 and can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
