Rampage Clipped by Iowa

Box Score | Game Notes

SAN ANTONIO (December 4, 2013) – The San Antonio Rampage (10-10-0-2) had the lead on four separate occasions, but were unable to come away with the win, as the Silver and Black fell to the Iowa Wild (8-11-0-0) in a shootout tonight, 5-4, at AT&T Center in front of 3,531 fans.

The win snaps a streak of four-straight shootout wins for the Rampage, who have now gone to a shootout in three-straight home games. San Antonio outshot Iowa, 48-33, on the night, marking the 12th time in the last 15 games that the Rampage have outshot their opposition.

Rampage defenseman Ryan Whitney had the lone multi-point game for the Silver and Black, while Vincent Trocheck, Colby Robak and Steve Pinizzotto chipped in goals for San Antonio

Wednesday’s tilt was a penalty-filled affair, as the two teams combined for 13 minor penalties. The game marked the second time this season the Rampage have scored multiple power-play goals, both of which came against Iowa. San Antonio went 2-for-7 on the night with the man advantage, while Iowa was 3-for-6 on the power play.

The first period featured a combined six minor penalties, with each team lighting the lamp once with the man advantage.

San Antonio struck first at 2:40 of the opening frame while on a 5-on-3 power play. After more than a minute of offensive zone time, Whitney executed a cross-ice pass right to Trocheck, who banged it into the vacant net.

Iowa responded exactly two minutes later, as Jonathon Blum beat Rampage netminder Jacob Markstrom at 4:40 of the opening period on the power play.

Robak gave the Rampage a 2-1 lead with a blast from the point at 10:24 that found its way through a crowd in front and over the glove of Iowa goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Greg Rallo and Drew Shore collected assists on the play.

The Wild once again knotted the game at 7:53 of the second period. Defenseman Steve Kampfer blasted a one-timer from the top of the right circle that found the back of the net.

San Antonio cashed in once again while on the power play at 9:28 of the middle frame. Whitney bombed a shot from the point through a heavy screen. Garrett Wilson and Jon Matsumoto had the assists on the goal.

Iowa forward Jason Zucker cashed in his second point of the night with a power-play goal at 17:50 to tie the game at 3-3. Only 14 seconds later the Rampage took the lead for the fourth time on the night at 18:04. Pinizzotto banged home a rebound at the top of the crease to give San Antonio a 4-3 lead after 40 minutes of action.

Entering the game, San Antonio held a perfect 6-0-0-0 record when leading after two periods of play, while Iowa was 0-8-0-0 when trailing after two. But both streaks would come to an end in the third period.

Markstrom preserved the one-goal lead four minutes into the third period when he made a sprawling glove save and was able to pull the puck off the goal line.

Not to be outdone, Kuemper made a highlight-reel save of his own with eight minutes left in regulation. Quinton Howden and Jed Ortmeyer sprang into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1. Howden fed Ortmeyer a perfect cross-ice pass, but Kuemper dove to his right and made an amazing glove save.

Brian Connelly cashed in Iowa’s third power-play goal of the night at 14:18 to make it a 4-4 game. Zucker collected an assist for his third point of the night and now has eight goals and nine assists in 11 career games against the Rampage.

Neither team was able to break the stalemate in regulation or overtime and the game went to a shootout.

The shootout went seven rounds, with Shore tallying the lone goal for the Rampage, while Zucker and Tyler Graovac lit the lamp to secure the win for the visiting Wild.

The Rampage open up a four-game road trip with a pair of games in Abbotsford on Friday and Saturday. The club will then travel to Charlotte for a pair of midweek tilts against the Checkers on Tuesday and Thursday of next week.

The Silver and Black return to the Alamo City on Saturday, Dec. 14 to face off against the Chicago Wolves at 7:00 p.m. during the team’s annual Teddy Bear Toss Night. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554, or online at sarampage.com.
