Rampage Drop Second Straight to Texas

Box Score | Game Notes

CEDAR PARK, Texas (December 18, 2013) – Both Garrett Wilson and Drew Shore stayed hot for the San Antonio Rampage (11-16-0-2), as they fell to the Texas Stars (17-8-2-2) for the second-straight game, losing 4-2 tonight at Cedar Park Center. The Rampage move to 1-4-0-0 against the Stars on the season.

Wilson scored just over a minute into the third for his eighth of year, giving him three goals in his last three games. His efforts earned him the Third Star of the Game. Shore’s assist streak continues to surge, as his assist on Wilson’s tally gives him six helpers in his last four games. Rob Madore made 28-of-31 saves in his debut for the Rampage. John McFarland netted his first of the year in the loss, playing in just his third game for the Silver and Black this season after being called up from Cincinnati of the ECHL on Dec. 13. Rookie Vincent Trocheck’s assist on McFarland’s marker snapped his five-game point drought, giving him 22 points on the season to lead all Rampage skaters.

Though the Rampage outshot the Stars, 14-11, in the first period, it was Texas who made their shots count. The Stars struck first at 15:18 of the first, as Travis Morin capitalized on the four-minute power play, ripping a one-timer from the right circle and beating Madore up high.

His 13th of the year pushes him to first in scoring among all AHL players, with 13 goals and 20 assists through 23 games.

Toby Petersen lead his team into the first intermission with his third of the year at 19:21 of the first. He picked up the puck after a turnover by the Rampage, wasting no time in making them pay the price, and making it 2-0 in favor of the Stars.

The Silver and Black got a little bit of momentum in the opening minutes of the second, successfully killing off a penalty and getting a great post-to-post save from netminder Madore. But the Stars continued their dominance, making it 3-0 at 9:40 of the second.

Matej Stransky fired in a shot from the point, and while Madore had the original save, the puck trickled loose behind him in the crease, giving Francis Wathier a chance to tap it in.

The Rampage began the third with 30 seconds of power play time leftover from a late Morin penalty in the second, but were unable to create any offense as Texas killed it off with ease.

Wilson continued his goal streak, finally beating Jack Campbell just 1:01 into the third. His eighth of the year was his third in as many games, and his second-straight goal coming early in the final frame. Wilson’s tally against Texas on Sunday came just five seconds in the third period.

Just 2:50 later, McFarland fired one past Campbell for his first goal of the year with the Rampage. Vince Trocheck made a good play along the boards and fed McFarland cleanly in the slot, where the winger put it home to make it a one-goal game, 3-2.

The late offensive push would prove to be futile, as Curtis McKenzie found the empty net for the second-straight game against the Rampage, icing the game, 4-2, in favor of the Stars.

The Rampage went 0-for-3 on the power play, and Texas cashed in once for the second-straight game, going 1-for-3 on the night. San Antonio outshot Texas, 32-31.

The Rampage will continue their three-game road trip with a stop in Milwaukee to face the Admirals on Friday (Dec. 20) before traveling to the Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday (Dec. 21) to take on the Iowa Wild. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554, or online at sarampage.com.
