Rampage Fall 3-2 to Rochester

Box Score | Game Notes

SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 18, 2014) – The San Antonio Rampage (15-21-1-3) saw their four game unbeaten streak end tonight as they fell 3-2 to the Rochester Americans (17-15-3-3) in front of a crowd of 6,544 at the AT&T Center.

Doug Janik tallied his first goal of the year on the power play, adding a nice touch to his 600th career AHL game. Quinton Howden recorded his sixth of the year, with Logan Shaw earning his first AHL point with the solo assist. Defenseman Matt Gilroy’s assist on the Janik tally gives him three assists in his last two games, as well as points in five of his last six games (2g-5a). Center Ryan Martindale notched his first point in a Rampage sweater tonight with the secondary assist on Janik’s goal. Netminder Rob Madore made 34-of-37 saves in the loss.

The Amerks struck just 2:18 into the opening frame, as Johan Larsson cashed in on a big rebound to give his team the 1-0 lead. Both teams would get their opportunity with the extra man, but neither could convert, and Larsson’s fourth of the season would stand as the lone tally through 20.

San Antonio evened the score on the power play at 6:16 of the second, as Gilroy fed Janik across the blueline, and the latter rocketed one in from the point, beating Amerks net-minder Nathan Lieuwen to make it 1-1.

The power-play tally marks the fifth game in their last seven that the Rampage have scored with the extra man.

With just over five remaining in the middle frame, Rochester took their lead back. Kevin Sundher was left all alone in front of the net, and beat Madore for the go-ahead goal.

In a repeat of the previous game, the Rampage fought back once again. This time, it was Howden who made it work. Grabbing a pass from Shaw, the winger raced into the zone and fired one from the right circle, knotting the game at two.

Jamie Tardif scored the second Amerks go-ahead goal 7:08 into the third, getting his stick on a ricocheting puck to deflect it past Madore for a 3-2 Rochester lead.

The Rampage added the extra attacker with a minute to go, but the bonus offense wasn’t enough to come back, and they snapped their four-game point streak, 3-2.

Both teams went 1-for-2 on the power play, and the Amerks outshot the Rampage, 37-28.

The Rampage will get five days of rest before taking on a three-in-three next weekend. Friday, Jan. 24 and Saturday, Jan. 25 will feature games against the Iowa Wild, and Sunday’s tilt will be the first contest of the year between the Rampage and the Grand Rapids Griffins. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at the Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554, or online at sarampage.com.
