Rampage Fall to Checkers 4-3

SAN ANTONIO (March 9, 2014) – The San Antonio Rampage (24-25-3-6) got two points from Wade Megan, but fell to the Charlotte Checkers (29-26-1-2) 4-3 on Sunday in front of 6,114 at the AT&T Center. San Antonio now sits in 12th place in the Western Conference, nine points back from the eighth and final playoff spot.

Wade Megan tallied a goal and an assist for his second multi-point game of the season, which earned him the Third Star of the Game. All but one Rampage player put at least one shot on goal in the loss.

Scott Clemmensen made 24 saves in his first game since being reassigned to the Rampage on March 5. Logan Shaw played in his 50th pro game, recording four shots.

Charlotte jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first six minutes. Brett Sutter put a Keegan Lowe feed past Clemmensen at 4:09, and just over two minutes later, Jared Staal took a pass from Matt Marquardt and fired to give the Checkers the two-goal lead.

The Rampage got on the board at 9:45 with a Ryan Whitney power play goal. Bobby Butler dished a pass to Mark Mancari on the low wing and Mancari sent it to Whitney, whose blast from the point beat John Muse to make it 2-1. Mancari’s assist was his 300th in the AHL.

Lowe went to the box at 11:13 for roughing and the Rampage struck again with 38 seconds left on the man advantage. John McFarland’s initial shot on the break was tipped by Megan, and Jed Ortmeyer punched it in from the crease at 12:35.

A boarding penalty to Megan late in the period gave the Checkers their third power play opportunity of the game, and Aaron Palushaj slipped a pass through traffic to a wide open Sutter in the slot to give Charlotte a 3-2 lead.

San Antonio tied the game at three in the third period, as Megan notched his seventh of the season at 7:42. Trevor Lewis sent a pass off the boards to Matt Gilroy on the break, and Gilroy hit Megan in stride for the tally.

The Checkers answered at 11:41 off a broken play in the neutral zone. Sean Dolan intercepted the puck and with just one defenseman to beat, put a shot on net. Palushaj buried the rebound to give Charlotte a 4-3 lead.

The Silver and Black were 2-for-3 on the power play while allowing just one goal on Charlotte’s four power play opportunities.

The Rampage hit the road to take on the Oklahoma City Barons on Tuesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. inside the Cox Convention Center. Fans can watch live via the AHL Live stream, listen live on The Ticket 760, or follow along on Twitter (@SARampageLive) and Facebook (/sarampagehockey). The Silver and Black return home against the Grand Rapids Griffins on Thursday at 7 p.m. for an All-You-Can-Eat Night at the AT&T Center. Tickets can be purchased at the AT&T Center Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554, or online at sarampage.com
