Rampage Doubled Up By Texas 8-4

SAN ANTONIO (April 12, 2014) – Garrett Wilson scored two goals and recorded his 100th professional point, but the San Antonio Rampage (29-34-3-6) fell to the Texas Stars (47-17-3-6) 8-4 on Military Appreciation Night at the AT&T Center.

Bobby Butler and Joey Crabb also tallied goals for the Rampage. Curtis McKenzie recorded a hat trick to lead Texas, and six different players recorded multi-point games for the Stars.

Like their Friday night matchup in Cedar Park, Texas struck early and often. Kevin Henderson kicked off the scoring, firing from the slot to give Texas a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game.

The league’s top power play scored on its first opportunity with the man advantage, as McKenzie deflected a Maxime Fortunus blast from long range to the top left corner. Just 57 seconds later, Radek Faksa scored his first pro goal to give the Stars a 3-0 lead, ending the night for Michael Houser, who was relieved by backup Rob Madore.

Travis Morin, who leads the Stars with 18 points against the Rampage, scored his 32nd goal of the season, taking a pass from Brendan Ranford in the slot and burying it to make it 4-0. A Fortunus rocket from the point made it 5-0 at 10:34, marking the most goals the Rampage have allowed in a single period all season.

San Antonio’s scoring drought ended with 1:32 left in the first period on the power play. Crabb tallied his 15th goal of the season, burying the rebound of a Wade Megan shot from the right circle to make it 5-1 at the first intermission.

The Rampage opened the second-period scoring as Cristopher Nilstorp left a rebound on the paint and Butler punched it in to make it 5-2 at 4:48.

Texas answered at 8:03 as the Stars caught the Rampage on a line change, giving Morin and McKenzie a 2-on-1 break. McKenzie tipped Morin’s centering pass past Madore to give the Stars a 6-2 lead.

Justin Dowling extended the Texas lead to five, converting off a Brett Ritchie pass to make it 7-2 just over a minute into the third period.

Wilson scored back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to three. Wilson’s first goal came off a Texas miscue, as Cameron Gaunce coughed up the puck in front of the net and Wilson was there to put it past Nilstorp. He took a pass from Butler in the crease and finished to make it 7-4 at 13:09. McKenzie’s empty net tally at 19:43 gave the league-leading Stars an 8-4 win.

San Antonio outshot Texas 30-26, including a 12-6 margin in the second period. The Silver and Black went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Stars finished with one goal on seven chances with the man advantage. Houser made 4-of-7 saves before being pulled out of the game. Madore made 14 saves on the 18 shots he faced, taking the loss.

The Rampage and the Stars wrap up their 12-game season series Sunday at 4 p.m., which is also an Express News Sunday Funday at the AT&T Center. Individual and season tickets can be purchased by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554 or online at sarampage.com.
