The 2010 NHL Scouting Combine ended over the weekend but not before the Coyotes interviewed approximately 65 draft eligible prospects in preparation for the NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles next month.

“I think the Combine is a real interesting part of the process as you connect all the dots,” Coyotes Assistant General Manager Brad Treliving said via email from Toronto during a break in the Combine. “You have a chance to meet with players individually and get a sense of their personality and try to peel back the onion a bit as it relates to what makes these kids tick. Many of the players are so well schooled and prepared coming into this week that you have to dig to find out what their real DNA make-up is.”

As of today, the Coyotes have five picks in this year’s draft, which will take place June 25-26. Phoenix has two first-round selections, and one each in the second, fourth and fifth rounds.
The NHL invited 100 draft eligible prospects to the Combine so the 30 teams could interview them and watch them perform physical tests.

“Our scouts have watched these players on the ice all year, have done the background research and have put in the time in the field,” Treliving said. “Now you try to find the one or two things that tie it all together.”

This week, Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney will take part in the General Managers meetings in Philadelphia. During the meetings, the NHL will hand out its inaugural General Manager of the Year award. Maloney is one of the three finalists for the award.
